But as the country becomes more secular, the image of a rigid, monolithic faith has faded.
As a result, Buddhisms are slowly becoming more inclusive, even in conservative parts of the country, where they are still often seen with a heavy-handed authoritarian bent.
As this new documentary from VICE News shows, however, Buddhism is far from being isolated.
As people struggle to reconcile the faith’s strict, literal interpretation of the Koran with the growing tolerance for secularism, some Buddhists are trying to take on more complex ideas about their religion, and how it relates to their everyday lives.
